"We are trotting slowly behind a rapidly changing climate," summarizes an IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) member. Twenty years after Jacques Chirac's famous phrase - "Our house is burning and we are looking the other way" - no one can, or should, doubt the ongoing disruption. But we are still far from the generalized measures that experts have been calling for for years.
How can we move from words to deeds, get out of inertia, and overcome certain lobbies? In this long interview, Jean Jouzel recounts his tireless struggle, with a view to passing on his findings to the younger generations. Testimonies from people involved in this fight shed light on his remarks. Jean Jouzel, born on March 5, 1947 in Janzé (Ille-et-Vilaine), is a French paleoclimatologist. He became known in 1987 when he published the first study establishing a link between CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and global warming.
He was vice-president of the IPCC between 2002 and 2015. Internationally recognized for his research work, he has received numerous scientific awards, including the CNRS gold medal.
