"Kobayashi Takiji, born in 1903 into a family of peasants in northern Japan, was employed at the Hokkaido Land Reclamation Bank. At the same time, he became interested in literature and participated in the creation of the magazine Kurarute (clarity), whose name was inspired by the movement initiated by Henri Barbusse. At the same time, he discovered the working conditions of the workers and peasants on the island of Hokkaido, where his family had been forced to emigrate when he was a child.
Due to the success of his first books, both among intellectuals and among workers and peasants, he was put under surveillance by the state security apparatus. The publication of The Absent Landlord, in which he denounced the direct responsibility of the bank that employed him for the poverty of the peasants, led to his dismissal at the end of 1929. The publication of The Factory Ship the same year established him as one of the greatest novelists of the Japanese working class.
However, in the context of the severe repression of left-wing movements, the book was censored as soon as it was published. The success led to Kobayashi's downfall. Imprisoned twice and then released in early 1931, he went into hiding. On 20 February 1933, he fell into an ambush by the political police. Taken to the police station, he died under torture."
